Imposter Syndrome and Identity (+)
I AM BACK after a short hiatus.
There’s been a lot going on, including the global launch of my book Conquer Your Imposter™
We’ve also shifted tech with the goal to serve you better! So thank you for your patience while we went offline in April.
AND welcome to the NEW - Conquer Your Imposter™ newsletter!
To truly conquer Imposter Syndrome, we don’t focus on the symptoms (they come later) we address the root cause.
The source.
The origin.
Which includes exploring Identity.
Identity can be understood as: An amalgamation of the beliefs, values, and understandings we hold about ourselves.
It’s our answer to the question, “Who am I?”
This complex web of self-conceptions starts forming early in life and is continually evolving, influenced by both internal and external factors.
Identity isn’t static. It can, and often does, evolve as we evolve. Shifts in identity can come through age, growth, relationships, and other factors, and when our identity is changing or being compromised, it can leave us feeling shaky. The key is to tune in, listen, and try to understand what’s happening. Otherwise, Imposter feelings can emerge. - Alison Shamir
Who you believe you are (or are not) sits at the very core of the Imposter experience.
And it’s from this core that two other powerful forces emerge: Inadequacy and Insecurity.
Together, they form 4 very powerful (I''s) Imposter Syndrome: Identity: Inadequacy: Insecurity: which I have been studying for over a decade.
My expert body of work goes deeper than symptoms.
It explores the inner architecture of what keeps high-performing, high-achieving individuals stuck in cycles of fear, overworking, self-sabotage, and silence.
Let’s unpack it a little (we also explore these concepts in my book) - Conquer Your Imposter™
Imposter Syndrome & Identity.
When someone says, “I feel like a fraud,” ... what they’re really saying is: “This version of me, the accomplished, capable, recognised one, doesn’t align with who I believe I am.”
The negative story we tell ourselves continues to fuel this self limiting belief.
It plays out in self deprecating internalised language such as:
People like me don’t make it here.
If I show up as my real/full self, I won’t be accepted.
I need to work harder to prove I belong.
Because Imposter Syndrome intersects identity, it keeps us disconnected from our REAL SELF and the truth of our capability and power.
A disconnect or shaky view of Identity then fuels Inadequacy.
You may achieve incredible results, receive praise, earn promotions BUT still feel you’re not enough. Because you’re not measuring yourself against evidence. You’re measuring yourself against an 'internal standard' shaped by fear.
And 'Imposter Syndrome standards' can never be met, that's why it keeps you in a cycle of self sabotage.
And for some of us that cycle can be relentless, which means the negative story can evolve to:
If I was really smart/deserved to be here, this would be easier.
They only chose me because they didn’t have any other options.
I have no idea what I’m doing, any moment now, they’ll figure it out.
None of this is true, but it feels REAL.
Inadequacy creates a very strong emotional response in our bodies, it's deep. And when we physically experience it, we tend to back away.
Inadequacy then leads to Insecurity.
That persistent sense of 'not being enough' evolves into insecurity - and when you're experiencing Imposter Syndrome, insecurity show's itself as - The fear of exposure.
This is where the common Imposter behaviours (symptoms/signs) show up:
- Over-preparing for every meeting
- Holding back ideas
- Dismissing compliments
- Burning out to prove your worth
- Self sabotaging Perfectionism
To name a few.
So when Imposter Syndrome is in the drivers seat and we feel inadequate and insecure we wear a 'MASK' to protect ourselves.
The 'MASK' causes us to act out the behaviours above, (which are really just coping mechanisms).
In order to conquer Imposter Syndrome, you must understand the way these 4I's are playing out for you.
You need to reconnect with all parts of your identity, not just your 'work' persona.
The power of the 4I's is in its Interconnectedness.
Once we understand it/them - we can intercept and redirect them.
You don’t conquer Imposter Syndrome by just trying to be more confident.
High confidence helps but it is not the answer.
Plus - most of you are already very confident.
You conquer Imposter Syndrome by going deeper to the beliefs, fear, and stories about who you believe you are (or are not).
We don't have to stay in the past, but we do need to understand it.
So just a reminder:
Imposter Syndrome isn’t a flaw to hide.
It’s a pattern to understand, dismantle, and redirect.
And that work starts at the intersection of Identity, Inadequacy, Insecurity and YOU.
You’re not a fraud.
You’re not broken.
You’re just temporarily blocked from seeing yourself clearly & internalising your success properly.
The good news is, you can learn to remove this blockage.
Then can finally remove the 'Mask' and act as your REAL SELF.
Because you've earned the right to be wherever you are.
You belong.
Until next week.
Alison
